ChatGPT for Business and Marketing (A Look Back at an SEO Experiment)

This post was originally written as an SEO test.

When ChatGPT Plugins were first introduced, I saw an opportunity to rank for a trending topic and bring in new traffic. It worked. At its peak, the page brought in over 17,000 visitors, mostly from organic search.

But like many trends, that initial surge didn’t last. Plugins were soon replaced by more practical tools, and user interest shifted. Still, I’ve kept this page because the need for real guidance around using ChatGPT in a business setting hasn’t gone away. If anything, it’s only grown.

So here’s an updated version, focused less on chasing traffic and more on how ChatGPT can actually be used by business owners, marketers, and B2B teams in 2025.

What ChatGPT Is Today

ChatGPT is no longer just a novelty or a content tool. It has evolved into a business asset that can write, analyze, organize, summarize, brainstorm, and automate.

With the Pro version (GPT-4), you can upload files, browse the web, process data, and even create your own Custom GPTs. These are AI assistants trained for specific tasks or industries.

This is especially helpful for lean teams, agencies, and anyone responsible for content, marketing, or operations.

From Plugins to Built-In Power

Back in 2023, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Plugins to extend the tool’s functionality. They allowed users to connect to the web, run code, and analyze files, but they were clunky and required setup.

By 2024, Plugins were phased out and replaced with something much better: native tools and Custom GPTs. Now, there’s no need for third-party installations. You can upload documents directly, analyze data inside the app, and browse the web, all from a simple interface. Even better, you can search the GPT Store and find AI assistants built specifically for industries like finance, real estate, logistics, and marketing.

Practical Ways B2B Teams Are Using ChatGPT

Most of the businesses I work with don’t have huge marketing departments or layers of analysts. They need tools that help them move faster, look more professional, and stay competitive without hiring extra staff.

That’s where ChatGPT has become especially useful. It’s not just writing blog posts; it’s helping with:

  • Email campaigns, sales follow-ups, and proposal templates
  • Summarizing client documents and creating onboarding materials
  • Turning blog content into LinkedIn posts, emails, and even lead magnets
  • Keyword research and brainstorming topic ideas for SEO
  • Creating SOPs, training content, and internal documentation

For small marketing teams or owner-led businesses, the time saved adds up quickly.

Prompt Writing Is a Skill

The quality of what you get out of ChatGPT depends on how you ask. One of the most important skills in 2025 is knowing how to write effective prompts. You can learn online through Coursera and Vanderbilt (as I did), along with extensive practice.

Instead of typing “write an email,” add structure and context. Here’s a simple formula I use:

Action + Details + Tone

For example:
“Act as an expert B2B email copywriter with a strong understanding of diagnostic medical equipment and the needs of primary care physicians. Write a friendly, professional email introducing time-saving diagnostic equipment that can help increase practice revenue. Highlight the key benefits for physicians, such as improved workflow efficiency, more billable services, and better patient care. Use a conversational tone that respects their time and encourages them to schedule a quick demo or call to learn more.”

The more specific you are, the better the results.

Why This Still Matters

While the “ChatGPT Plugins” keyword spike has come and gone, the value of this tool hasn’t. If anything, ChatGPT has quietly become one of the most powerful productivity tools available, especially for businesses trying to do more with less.

Whether you’re improving your marketing, supporting your sales team, or documenting internal processes, ChatGPT helps you move faster, generate better content, and free up time for more strategic work.

This post may have started as an SEO experiment, but I hope the updated version gives you a real look at how we use AI behind the scenes and how you can too.
